The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Master Health 638’ Contract, operated and managed by the Tribal Health Administration does the planning, managing resources, operate monitor and review the health care delivery system of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

Under the Tribal Health Administration, there is direct supervision over the following P.L. 93-638 contracts: Community Health Representatives Program, Chemical Prevention Program, Health Education Program, Suicide Prevention Program, Radiology, Week-end Physicians, and Psychologist.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Health Education and Welfare Committee, along with Tribal Health Administration reviews and makes recommendations to assist and deliver health services to the Indian people of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.




With the above funding for the programs that deal with the Health and Welfare of our people on Standing Rock, the communities, the sick, the elderly, the diabetic, the addicted, the cancer patients, and many other with needs for medication, x-ray, ambulance, week-end Doctors, and mental health issues are being addressed.

*The Tribal Health Administration utilizes two key positions that administer the entire 638’ Indian Health Service Master Health Programs. One Tribal Health Director and one Administrative Assistant to administer these programs which we have been working to make the most of the funding we have and maintain quality services for the people of Standing Rock. We have achieved many accomplishments and strive to meet our goals and objectives in accordance with our contracts. We have many knowledgeable and experienced Directors whom know the needs of our people and the vision for the success of our programs.

*With the Tribal Health Administration in place, the Standing Rock Sioux
Tribe ensures the working relationship that has been built and is in place
with the Indian Health Services that is currently the only Health Facility
within a 75 mile radius. This relationship ensures the people of Standing
Rock with the health care that is needed on a day-to-day basis.

*The Tribal Health Administration provides services from various
programs that ultimately deal with the health and well being of the people
of Standing Rock Nation. With these critical services, it not only has
drastic effects on lives of especially the children and elderly and the
chronically ill, which would be life threatening.

*There are numerous Cancer Patients on Standing Rock currently on fixed incomes that require the services of the Tribal Health Administration to assist them to chemotherapy, appointments, and after through the Kay Murphy Cancer Fund.

*The Week-End Physicians are available to provide Emergency Room Coverage at the Indian Health Services that would mean stabilizing patients with major trauma or critical care, admissions, arrangement for transfers to a higher facility, examinations, diagnosing, and providing appropriate treatment, ordering of medications after hours for pharmacy, casting, suturing, IV’s and any other emergency related events.

*Ambulance/Emergency Medical Services provide for the Advanced Life emergency medical service and referral transportation with a dispatch system to the Indian people on the Standing Rock Reservation to the Indian Health Service Hospital and its contract facilities as required. To operate an Emergency Medical Services Program (ambulance and referral transportation) service, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in accordance with program guidelines.

*The CHR Program is for the purpose of providing Outreach Care Services to the eligible Native Americans living on or near Standing Rock Reservation of North Dakota and South Dakota which includes Sioux County and Corson County. They will provide adequate information, training, and assistance for creating opportunity to develop skills which will allow individuals to participate in their own preventive health care. They have eight objective: I. Diabetes/Hypertension 2. Cancer 3. Accidents and injuries 4. Gerontology 5. Medical services 6.Environment Health 7. Performance monitoring 8. Evaluation. Transportation in accordance with the SRST CHR Program Transportation Policy, they will provide non-emergent transportation only after all other resources have been exhausted.


*Injury Prevention’s primary focus is education and public awareness of traffic safety, child restraints, and seat belt safety.



*Nutrition for the Elderly Program will provide 33 1/3 RDA noon meals to all our Elders on Standing Rock. They are providing services to all (8) District sites.

*The Diabetes Program focuses on providing general education on diabetes, exercise, and nutrition to prevent diabetes and the complications that it causes.

*The Substance Abuse Prevention Program/Tobacco Prevention Program will partner with Health Education and the CHR Program to publicize community events. It provides education on Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Free events.

*The Elderly Protection Program provides protective services to the elderly and disabled of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. There main scope of work is to be present and attend court hearing in reference to our elders and the disabled.

*The Oniyapi Program was designed to work with those individuals who are experiencing suicidal ideation or who are recovering from past attempts. The program works with referrals that of the target population of young adults and teens as well as adults. A large majority of these people have issues with substance abuse and or domestic abuse as well as other aggravating factors. The program assists these people in accessing our mental health services. Program services include transportation and case management.

*Radiology is provided at the Service Unit, meaning there is access for emergencies for trauma, fractures, sprains, etc. for patients that would normally be provided by the radiology department.

*The Chemical Prevention Program/Alcoholism Program provides services for Day Treatment and Out Patient Alcohol and Drug Treatment for Youth and Adults. With this service to the reservation, it provides Alcohol and Drug Awareness and treatment for a much needed population. The Standing Rock Nation has a high rate of alcoholism and drug addiction and with the Chemical Prevention Program in place most services are provided.

*Health Education provides Health Promotion/Disease Prevention in all areas of medical and chromic diseases to the communities, schools, and works collaboratively with Indian Health Service to get information disseminated to the reservation which is on 2.3 million acres which covers both the North/South Dakota portions of the reservation and with these services and education, our people have access to this information.

*Environmental Health provides services in the area and expertise of food services and sanitation. This is critical because of the food borne illnesses; it places our Headstarts, Casinos, Schools, Childcare facilities, and Nutrition for the Elderly at low risk for illness.

*The Suicide Prevention Program provides the public with education and prevention activities for suicides. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has a high rate of suicides that is double the national average. With program services the awareness and help that the high-risk youth received decreases this would be life or death situation.

*The Early Childhood Tracking Program provides services to the children birth to 5 for the growth and development of the child. They provide transportation and referral services, therapy and in-home testing and care for children. With this program many children can be tracked or found at a young age with disabilities to be able to provide a much needed service.

*The Psychologist is to provide and improve the quality of behavioral health services. This position for a Psychologist can increase available resources to better meet the mental health needs of the enrolled members of a federally recognized tribe residing on the Standing Rock Reservation. They will provide individual and group therapy, formulate individual treatment plans, and consult with staff, including physicians, clinical nurses, public health nurses, pharmacists and other health care resources in exploring alternative plans for resolution of problems. They will provide crisis intervention service to clients with a wide variety of acute mental health problems, including suicide attempts, counseling, family conflicts, alcohol abuse, death, or trauma resulting from violence.
